Management of Polycystic Kidney Disease in Childhood

Matko Marlais
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, United Kingdom

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) are conditions which share many clinical features. Historical definitions separated these conditions into “adult” and “childhood” polycystic kidney disease; however both conditions can present across different stages of life with cases of ADPKD identified antenatally along with an increasing recognition of ARPKD presenting in adolescence or adult life. This lecture will provide an overview of the management of ADPKD and ARPKD with a focus on childhood. Recent data on kidney disease progression, risk prediction, cardiovascular disease and hypertension will be presented. This lecture will also critically review key management dilemmas facing clinicians when treating children with these conditions. The lecture will provide a summary of updated clinical practice guideline recommendations.
